Electronic Sports World Cup Still All To Play For Says Paddy Power
The Summer of Soccer may be over for English fans, but there is another World Cup that will be making history this week. On Thursday July 1st next, the Electronic Sports World Cup Grand Final will begin at the Disney's Newport Bay Club, and Paddy Power will be taking bets on one of the 10 tournaments being played, Counterstrike: Source.
It’s not the first time Paddy Power will have taken bets on computer game tournaments such as this – back in April, they took live bets on the outcome of a Super Street Fighter IV tournament, and this was closely followed by another PC gaming event in May.
The ESWC Grand Final will host during four days ten tournaments gathering more than 500 international champions from more than 32 countries. There will be 10 tournaments of various games, and Paddy Power taking bets on one of these represents a general move towards the legitimisation of the eSports industry.
Paddy Power, spokesperson for the betting company, said “eSports is not an overnight sensation – the EWSC is now in it’s 7th year, for example – but we’ve seen an increase in interest in these events as the prize-money has increased. We’re the first bookies to be taking bets on these events, but we’re anticipating other companies to follow suit shortly in this regard”.
