England are favourites to make the World Cup final according to Paddy Power.

However it’s not Fabio’s flops, who are already back home with their feet up, but referee Howard Webb. The Premier League official is 7/4 favourite to be the ref for the World Cup Final on July 11th after a string of impressive performances in South Africa. Webb, who also took control of this season’s Champions League final, had been a 28/1 shot for the honour prior to the tournament.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Unless he drops a clanger of Graham Poll or Jorge Larrionda proportions Webb’s performances at the World Cup have made him the front-runner for the ultimate refereeing honour on July 11 – certainly the commentators are not being shy in reminding us there is at least one Englishman putting in a performance in South Africa!”

Uruguayan ref Jorge Larrionda, the man who missed Frank Lampard’s goal that never was against Germany has slumped in the betting to 150/1. Larrionda had been the 11/2 second favourite prior to the tournament. Italy’s Roberto Rossetti, the ref who allowed Carlos Tevez’s controversial goal against Argentina has also slumped in the betting to 150/1 from 7/1 whilst Webb’s main rival looks to be Switzerland’s Massimo Busacca at 11/4 from 9/2.

With the TV commentators clutching at straws to big up an Englishman at the World Cup the bookie is also betting on how many times Howard Webb is named during his next World Cup match, offering 11/8 for nine or mentions as they desperately try to claim some glory for England in the wake of the Three Lions failures.

And should disheartened supporters heed radio commentator Alan Green’s advice and boycott England’s next Wembley appearance against Hungary on August 11th its 10/3 for an attendance of less than 50,000.
