The Full Story Behind Gamesys

About Gamesys Operations Limited

Gamesys Operations Limited is the licensed entity that holds your account when you play at Jackpotjoy, Virgin Games, Monopoly Casino or any of the other brands listed above. UKGC licence 38905 has been active since November 2014 and covers remote bingo, casino and betting. The company is registered in Gibraltar at Suite 2, Floor 4, Waterport Place, GX11 1AA.

Your customer contract is with Gamesys Operations Limited (the UKGC licence holder). Bally's Intralot is the parent group behind the brands, while Gamesys is the licensed operator running them for UK players. The Bally's Intralot owner guide covers the corporate history and acquisition trail.

The Gamesys Story

Gamesys was founded in 2001 by Noel Hayden under the name Intercontinental Online Gaming Ltd. Hayden was a self-described gaming geek who had previously built and sold an earlier online company for £7 million. With that capital, he set up what would become Gamesys.

Jackpotjoy.com launched in 2002. It was not the first online bingo site in the UK, but it helped change how online bingo looked and played. The platform grew through partnerships: Sun Bingo arrived in 2008, Heart Bingo in 2010, and in 2013 Gamesys partnered with Richard Branson's Virgin brand to move Virgin Games onto the Gamesys platform.

In 2015, Gamesys sold Jackpotjoy to Canadian company Intertain Group for £425.8 million, but continued to operate the site under licence. That same year, Monopoly Casino launched and quickly became one of Gamesys's fastest-growing brands. In 2019 came a reverse takeover: JPJ Group (formerly Jackpotjoy plc) acquired Gamesys, and the combined company rebranded as Gamesys Group plc.

Behind the scenes, Gamesys had run brands through several subsidiaries: Entertaining Play, Nozee Limited and Profitable Play. In 2020, all three merged into a single entity: Gamesys Operations Limited. That is the company name you'll see on site footers and on the UKGC public register.

Player Protections and Safety

Gamesys Operations Limited holds a current UKGC remote gambling licence (38905). The UKGC sets rules around player verification, game fairness, marketing standards and complaint handling that Gamesys must follow. Key protections for UK players:

  • UKGC licence 38905: covers bingo, casino and betting (active since November 2014)
  • Fund protection: customer funds segregated under UKGC requirements
  • GAMSTOP connected, plus site-level deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks
  • ADR provider: IBAS, independent dispute resolution if a complaint cannot be resolved directly
  • How to verify a genuine site: check the footer for licence 38905 and confirm the domain on the UKGC public register

Regulatory Record

Gamesys Operations Limited was fined £6 million by the UK Gambling Commission in January 2024 for anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures. According to the UKGC regulatory sanctions page, the investigation covered the period from November 2021 to July 2022 and found failings in how Gamesys checked where money was coming from and when it stepped in to help customers showing signs of problem gambling.

Specific examples cited by the UKGC included one customer who deposited £8,255 within three days of opening an account without triggering any risk flags, and another who lost £17,482 within 34 days. In one case, a customer was only contacted after losing almost £10,000, and that interaction involved recommending new games rather than offering support. The total penalty was £6,071,292, and Gamesys was required to undergo a third-party audit of its AML and safer gambling controls.

The Commission noted that Gamesys cooperated throughout the investigation and had already begun taking corrective steps before the penalty was issued.

Glitzy Bingo and Gamesys

Glitzy Bingo has covered Gamesys brands since 2007, making it one of the longest-standing operator relationships on the site. The Gamesys platform is built in-house rather than white-labelled from a third party, which means each brand has its own look and feel. Jackpotjoy does not look like a clone of Monopoly Casino, even though they share the same backend. Daily Free Games, the Double Bubble slot series, and the Secrets of the Phoenix franchise remain signature features across the network. The £6 million UKGC fine in 2024 is a mark against the record, but the corrective steps and third-party audit since then suggest the direction of travel is improving. Gamesys: FAQs

What is Gamesys Operations Limited?

Gamesys Operations Limited is the remote gambling operator behind UK brands including Jackpotjoy, Virgin Games, Monopoly Casino, Double Bubble Bingo, Rainbow Riches Casino and Bally Bet. It holds UK Gambling Commission licence 38905 and is registered in Gibraltar. If you play at any of these sites, Gamesys is the legal entity responsible for your account.

Why does my bank statement say Gamesys Operations?

Payments are processed under the operator's legal name, not the brand. Deposits and withdrawals at Jackpotjoy, Virgin Games, Monopoly Casino, Double Bubble Bingo, Rainbow Riches Casino or Bally Bet will appear on your statement as Gamesys Operations Limited. This is standard practice required by payment regulations. It is not a separate or unexpected charge. If you do not recognise a transaction, log into each brand and check your transaction history.

Who owns Gamesys?

Gamesys Operations Limited sits within the parent group covered in our Bally's Intralot guide.

For UK players, the most checkable reference is the UKGC public register: Gamesys Operations Limited is the licence holder under 38905.

Source: UKGC licence 38905.

Is Jackpotjoy the same as Gamesys?

Jackpotjoy is a brand operated by Gamesys Operations Limited. When you play at Jackpotjoy, your account sits under Gamesys's UKGC licence 38905. Jackpotjoy was the first Gamesys brand, launching in 2002, and it remains the flagship site. You'll see Gamesys Operations Limited in the Jackpotjoy site footer and on your bank statement. The full list of Jackpotjoy sister sites shows all the other Gamesys brands.

Is Gamesys safe to play on?

Gamesys Operations Limited holds a current UKGC remote gambling licence (38905), active since November 2014. All sites are GAMSTOP connected and offer deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks. The independent dispute provider is IBAS. However, Gamesys was fined £6 million in January 2024 for anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures between 2021 and 2022. The company has since undergone a third-party audit and tightened its controls.

If I self-exclude from one Gamesys site, am I blocked from all of them?

Because all Gamesys brands share UKGC licence 38905, self-exclusion should apply across the group. If you exclude from Jackpotjoy, you should also be blocked from Virgin Games, Monopoly Casino, Bally Bet and the other Gamesys brands. For guaranteed coverage across all UK-licensed operators, not just Gamesys, register with GAMSTOP. If you have self-excluded but can still access a Gamesys site, contact their support immediately.

Is Virgin Games the same as Jackpotjoy?

They are separate brands with separate accounts, but they are both operated by Gamesys Operations Limited under the same UKGC licence (38905). They share the same backend platform, many of the same slots (including Double Bubble and Secrets of the Phoenix), and similar bingo rooms. The differences are branding and promotions. Virgin Games has Virgin Red Hot rewards, while Jackpotjoy has its own Daily Free Games. Think sister sites, not the same site. See all Virgin Games sister sites for the full picture.

What happened to Megaways Casino?

Megaways Casino was a Gamesys brand that closed in 2023. It was replaced on the network by Bally Bet, which launched that same year as Bally's flagship UK site. If you were a Megaways Casino customer, your account cannot be transferred to Bally Bet. You would need to register separately. Most of the same slots and games that were on Megaways Casino are available across the remaining Gamesys brands.

Does Gamesys have an app?

Gamesys does not have its own app. It is an operator, not a brand. However, the brands it operates each have their own apps. Jackpotjoy, Virgin Games and Monopoly Casino all have dedicated apps for iOS and Android. Bally Bet also has a mobile app with sports betting. Each app is listed under the brand name in the App Store or Google Play, not under Gamesys Operations.

Was Gamesys fined by the Gambling Commission?

Yes. In January 2024, the UKGC fined Gamesys Operations Limited £6,071,292 for anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures that occurred between November 2021 and July 2022. The investigation found that some customers were able to deposit significant amounts without adequate checks. As a condition of the fine, Gamesys was required to undergo a third-party audit. Full details are on the UKGC regulatory sanctions page.

Is Gamesys the same as Bally's?

Not exactly. Bally's Corporation acquired Gamesys Group in 2021, making Gamesys the international interactive arm of Bally's. In October 2025, that division was sold to Intralot at an enterprise value of €2.7 billion, forming Bally's Intralot. So Gamesys Operations Limited is the licensed UK operator that runs the sites day to day, while Bally's Intralot is the parent company that owns it. Your relationship as a player is with Gamesys.

What is Gamesys Operations Limited Gibraltar?

If you have seen "Gamesys Operations Limited" with a Gibraltar address, that is correct. The company is registered in Gibraltar at Suite 2, Floor 4, Waterport Place, GX11 1AA. Gibraltar is a common base for UK-licensed online gambling operators because of its regulatory framework and tax structure. Despite the Gibraltar registration, Gamesys holds a UK Gambling Commission licence (38905) and must follow all UKGC rules for UK players.
