Gala Bingo Review

The history of Gala Bingo starts back in 1983 with Bass plc, who had 22 clubs operating under the Coral brand and another 24 clubs around its Pontins holiday camps. In that same year Bass purchased a chain of 80 bingo clubs from a company called Thorn EMI for £18.2million,

By 1988, Bass plc had clubs in 72 locations around the UK, but added another 30 Clubs when they purchased Zetters Leisure for £23 million.

In May 1991, Bass plc purchased 74 bingo clubs from Granada plc for the sum of £147 million. Combined with Bass's 91 bingo clubs, the chain was tied with the Rank Organisation (Owners of Mecca Bingo) for the largest bingo operator in Britain.

The new name "Gala" was chosen for the brand by John Murphy of Interbrand who combined letters from "Granada" and "Coral", Gala was then officially launched on 17th October 1991 when 17 bingo clubs re-branded and launched the new image.

In 1997 a management buy-in purchased all 130 Gala Bingo Clubs from Bass plc for £235 million. Over the following few years, Gala increased their number of clubs by purchasing more bingo clubs from other bingo hall companies this included 17 clubs from Ritz in July 1998 and 10 clubs from Jarglen in March 2000.

In April 2000, Gala increased again by buying 27 Riva Bingo Clubs from First Leisure for £90 million. They also diversified outside bingo for the first time in December 2000 by purchasing 26 Ladbrokes Casinos for £235 million from the Hilton Group. In 2001 they acquired the Jamba Online business for £1.5m, this is what led to Gala building one of the first online bingo clubs where players could enter Gala Bingo, login and experience online bingo gaming for the first time.

Gala later became an independent company, and renamed the company to Gala Coral Group after acquiring Coral Eurobet in 2005.

The amount of Gala Bingo Clubs around the UK peaked at around 174, but since the introduction of smoking bans in Great Britain in 2007, the total declined to around 140.

In 2015, Gala Coral Group sold 126 clubs in 2015 to Caledonia Investments a UK company, they then rebranded all of the high street Gala Bingo clubs to Buzz Bingo in September 2018. This purchase did not include GalaBingo.com. Gala Coral retained the online Gala services which included Coral Bingo, Gala Spins, GalaCasino and this was later acquired by GVC Holdings a company who owns Foxy Bingo and Ladbrokes.
